‘Umm Al-Qura’ Embodies the Concept of Volunteering and Manages It in an Institutional Framework

The General Supervisor of the Voluntary Work Administration at Umm Al-Qura University, Prof. Salih Al-Furaih, stressed the need for the volunteer to possess the basics for effective communication, and to acquire the necessary skills to communicate with the different community members. These abilities constitute the major factors contributing to the success of volunteer work and the gains achieved that enable the volunteer to continue in the field and be persistent in his work, in accordance with the standards necessary to ensure the quality of work.

This took place during the symposium on "Effective Communication in Voluntary Work" organized by the General Administration of Institutional Communication at Umm Al-Qura University, in conjunction with the International Volunteer Day and with the participation of a number of university leaders and academics specialized in the fields of volunteering and communication.

The Vice Dean of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research, Dr. Mazin Al-Shamrani, in the sessions of the seminar moderated by the Deputy Supervisor of the Institutional Communication Department, Dr. Hanadi Bihairi, specified the most prominent areas of volunteer work in which the university students and its employees have been able to participate, namely: serving the guests of Allah, whether in the field or in research, in addition to the media and environmental field, through rehabilitation and training in field and specialized skills. This is in order to develop the best methods of dealing with Allah's guests, and correct the common mistakes to enhance experience, transfer knowledge, and increase the acquired experience.

The Dean of the College of Nursing, Dr. Fatimah Al-Sulami, discussed the college’s role in communicating with external volunteer bodies, and its keenness to prepare distinguished cadres in the field of nursing. She cited the college’s successful experiences and participations with the health volunteer platform of the Ministry of Health and charities for healthcare, such as the "Derham Weqaya" association for community service.

The Advisor of the Vice President for Female Student Affairs, Dr. Haifaa Fida, summarized the most important communication skills between workers in the volunteer field and the target groups. She explained the role of behavioral features and patterns, whether through direct or electronic communication, in promoting voluntary communication.

The Vice Dean of the Higher Institute for Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil, Dr. Iman Maghrabi, reviewed the role of volunteer teams and their committees, the challenges facing community communication work, and the methods and ways of sustaining individuals' efforts in volunteer work.

On his part, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Society for Quality in the Makkah Region, Dr. Khalid Al-Akwaa, discussed several themes, including the quality of volunteer work, its requirements, benefits and methods of application, at both levels: personal and institutional, and the need for carrying out internal auditing for non-profit organizations.

At the conclusion of the symposium, the Deputy General Supervisor of the General Administration of Institutional Communication, Dr. Muhammad Al-Omari, on behalf of the General Supervisor of the Administration, Dr. Abdullah Al-Shinqiti, thanked the academics involved in enriching the symposium with scientific content in various volunteer fields. He stressed the administration's keenness to produce the contents of the valuable symposium in a special edition for its participation in the celebration of the International Volunteer Day.
