Dr. Abdullah Ghurmullah bin Othman, Assistant Professor of Engineering Geology and Environmental Modeling and Head of the Environmental and Health Research Department, specializing in Satellite Applications and Geomechanical Intelligence at Umm Al-Qura University, was chosen to be a member of the NASA-supported science team studying and evaluating one of the world's largest fossil groundwater systems. The system is the fossil groundwater system in the Arabian Peninsula, the largest part of which is located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The four-year study, with the participation of scientists and specialists from the University of Western Michigan and the University of Southern California, will model data for a group of newly launched active satellites.
Dr. Abdullah stressed that this study will have a major impact on the water resources management system in the kingdom. The study will also contribute to simulating the physical behavior of giant underground water reservoirs located under the world's largest deserts. This is in addition to contributing to many other geological and hydrological applications.
