Senior Researcher from Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata Visits the University and Lectures on Future Research Trends

In his lecture, Prof. Samir Kumar Pal stressed the need to rely on the interplay of science with each other to solve research problems that lead to the advancement of society. He stated in a scientific lecture entitled, "Modern and Future Research Trends Consistent with the Saudi Vision 2030", that the overlap is either between basic, engineering or medical sciences; some health problems, for example, need new scientific methods in order to be discovered, employing newly manufactured devices to help diagnose them, or between renewable energy and the environment.

The lecture attracted a number of officials; the Dean of the College of Applied Sciences, Dr. Hatem Muhammad Al-Tas, being in the forefront, as well as vice deans of the college, heads of the departments, male and female faculty members from different colleges, and a number of postgraduate and undergraduate students.

The Head of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Ismail Al-Thaqafi, observed that Dr. Kumar's visit comes within a series of lectures, scientific meetings, workshops and visits to the different facilities of the university. These have been pre-arranged with Professor Kumar Pal, in addition to many reviews and evaluations of study plans, graduation projects, and master’s and doctoral theses, aiming to improve educational and research outcomes.

On his part, the Dean of the College of Applied Sciences, Dr. Hatem Al-Tas, appreciated the fruitful cooperation with the UQU Vice Presidency for Development and Entrepreneurship, represented by the International Cooperation Unit. He noted the great support received by the College of Applied Sciences from His Excellency Prof. Abdullah bin Omar Bafail to recruit outstanding scientific expertise from outside Saudi Arabia, for the good of the university and society in general.

Prof. Kumar is a visiting professor at the Department of Chemistry in the College of Applied Sciences. His lecture was arranged, in cooperation with the Vice Presidency for Development and Entrepreneurship, represented by the International Cooperation Unit. He is a member in the team of the Nobel Prize winning Prof. Ahmad Zewail, who he worked with for 12 years.

He is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India. He has much experience, and many applied scientific research publications and patents in this field.

He won many awards, including the Nina Saxena Excellence in Technology Award, India Initiative Award 2019, and the award for Technological Education and Research (Nanotechnology) 2007. He published more than 260 scientific papers, has 30 patents, 3 advanced technologies that were transferred to industry and products in the market, and 6 scientific books. He also delivered more than 250 scientific lectures at international conferences. He has completed the supervision of more than 35 doctoral students, and is currently supervising 30 doctoral students in many fields. He is the editor of some prestigious international journals, and continually works as a visiting professor in many places in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
