The book titled "Introduction to Radio and TV" by Dr. Wadei Al-Az'azi, the staff member and Associate Professor at the Department of Mass Communication at Umm Al-Qura Univerity (UQU), was recently issued. It was noted in the introduction of the book that radio and television were two of the mass means of communication that had immediate direct influence and were full of trust and credibility. In other words, radio had a great influence on the various categories of audience, as it broadcasted material rapidly at different times to audiences in various or remote places; it could reach people wherever they were at the least costs. In the same context, television, including different satellite channels, was considered one of the visual means of media that connected image, sound and movement. Therefore, the influence of television on the audience was much stronger than the influence of radio; in addition to sound, television presented a dynamic vivid image full of colors and direction and graphic arts.
Within the accelerating development of modern communication technologies, radio and television kept pace with such developments and sought to benefit from them in various technical, program and engineering, etc. approaches in order to guarantee their continuous existence and influence on audience. Thus, the book aims to be an introduction to radio and television, a reference to media students, as well as researchers and attention payers to radio and television. The book simplifies for them the approaches in relation to radio and television work, in addition to developments that accompanied it.
The book comprises two chapters. The first chapter demonstrates an introduction to radio through five aspects about 1) the establishment, development and characteristics of radio, 2) radio in the Arab world, 3) radio broadcasting, radio studio, and forms of radio programs. The second chapter presents the introduction to television through four aspects about 1) the establishment, development and characteristics of TV, 2) TV in the Arab world, 3) TV studios and their equipment (cameras, lighting, microphones, and sound blenders) as well as the most significant technical styles that are used in radio and TV such as outage, appearance and disappearance, shots, shooting angles and TV montage, 4) forms of TV programs.
It is worth mentioning that this book comes within a series of mass communication books issued by Dr. Al-Az'azi: (Satellite Channels at the Age of Globalization," "New Mass Communication," "Mass Communication Studies," "Audio Material Production," and " Satellite Channels at the Age of Image Culture and Modern Communication Technologies."
