Shopping is no longer the only reason to visit shopping malls. Health awareness is the new dimension added by 70 first year students from UQU College of Medicine through the "Do it Yourself" campaign designed to raise awareness about heart disease and cancerthat was launched last weekend in Jeddah.
The UQU Medical students turned the front yard of the Arab Mall in Jeddah into a health awareness area. They educated shoppers of different ages about heart disease and cancer through the "Student Medical Club" of the UQU Deanship of Student Affairs under the supervision of Dr. Abdul-Haleem Sairafi, the Head of the Department of Physiology at the College of Medicine and Dr. Emad Tashkandi, the Oncology Consultant at the College of Medicine.
The "Do it Yourself" campaign aimed to raise awareness of all members about the risks for heart disease and cancer, and preventive measures that can be taken. This includes heart attacks, inflammation of the heart membrane, genetic heart abnormalities, brain strokes, vascular diseases, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and cancers of the stomach, pancreas, intestine and lungs.
The head of the campaign, student Hatim Al-Sulami, said that the campaign falls within the programs and goals of the Heart Club, which seeks to provide students with the necessary skills to deal with different cases and how to provide advice and guidance to different groups within the community, especially children. He extended his thanks to the supervisors of the campaign and to His Excellency the Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Abdul-Salam Nur Wali, for his keenness in all the activities provided for the students.
