Dr. Naseem Alotaibi, an assistant professor of English Literature, presented a paper on Friday August 6, 2021, entitled '"Of [one’s] own clime, complexion and degree:" Tackling the Ethnic and Religious Issues of Othello in the Saudi Classroom' in the Shakespeare In/Action conference held virtually by the British Shakespeare Association (5-7 August).
This paper aims to contribute to the ongoing dialogue about racism and racial issues in Shakespeare's plays, but by adopting a different approach to addressing the theme of cultural difference (or the concept of ‘the other’) in multi-cultural classrooms, and thus aims to experiment with different methodologies in teaching Othello to a single-culture classroom.
