Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic banks in activating the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the private sector through a case study of Bank Albilad in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, focusing on the distinct nature of Islamic banking and its inherent connection to ethical and developmental values derived from Islamic Sharia. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach by analyzing the bank's annual reports and official publications related to social responsibility activities. It also utilized the four dimensions of social responsibility—environmental, ethical, philanthropic, and economic—as a theoretical framework to analyze the bank’s experience. The findings indicate that Bank Albilad pays significant attention to social responsibility by implementing diverse and comprehensive initiatives targeting various segments of society, contributing to supporting sustainable development and achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the bank’s initiatives have yielded a distinct positive impact in the areas of financial literacy, support for people with disabilities, volunteer work, and environmental preservation, in addition to contributing to human resource development, promoting financial inclusion, and supporting community and developmental projects. The study also concludes that the bank adopts an institutional methodology in planning and implementing its social initiatives, while identifying opportunities to enhance certain aspects of impact measurement and long-term sustainability. This would maximize the socioeconomic benefits for society, bolster the role of Islamic banks in serving sustainable development and social responsibility, enhance institutional performance efficiency, and achieve sustainable social impact.
