On Sunday 13/6/1438 A.H, Dr. Bakri bin Matouq Asas, the University Rector, checked out the development and the improvement executed for the typical neighborhood in Hamraa Al-Assad in Madinah and its transformation from a slum to a typical neighborhood. The Rector was accompanied by Eng. Mohammed Abbas, the deputy governor of Madinah region and the Assistant of Development Affairs, Dr. Sami Barhameen, the Dean of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research, Dr. Ahmed Qazi, the Vice-dean of the Institute branch in Madinah and Dr. Abdullah Al-Sibai. These developments are part of the initiatives launched by His Highness the Emir of Madinah region for the development and transformation of slums in Madinah into typical neighborhoods through contributions from some businessmen in the region, the secretariat of the region and the electricity company.
The Rector listened to a detailed explanation from the deputy governor about this project executed on an area of approximately28500 square meters and its public facades which are consistent with the urban pattern of the folk heritage of Medina. The project's dwellings are 37 of which about 42 families benefit. The project's dwellings windows were geometrically designed so that they are an integrated unit that makes the visitor feel he is in a one harmonized urban block. The Islamic bow has been also used which is used in the Prophet's mosque architecture. In addition, colors that combine modernization and heritage have been used. The architectural brides have been used to obscure the vision for the dwellings roofs and give aesthetic appearance at the end of the buildings. These architectural brides have been linked to the Islamic architecture and have been implemented using a material resistant to external erosion factors occurring on the dwellings. The entrances of the project's dwellings have covers designed for the doors which consider the inside privacy of each dwelling when it is opened. The Arab thread is also used on the cover design to give it an Islamic architectural decorative identity. Moreover, positive messages were written in Arabic authentic calligraphy on the cover. The air conditioners coverings were designed to be portraits of the Arab characters. This makes the neighborhood residents feel an additional value of the importance of the Arabic language and its beauty in art and design compositions. The Medina stones were used in design to provide the building with a strong established base, to protect the buildings from external factors and to connect the buildings with the external surrounding environment. At the time, these stones were used in paving streets and around dwellings to create harmony and architectural coherence with buildings to be one block visually and architecturally interconnected.
The Rector expressed his thanks and appreciation to His Highness the Emir of Madinah region HRH Prince Faisal bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud - may God protect him – for his adoption and launching of this initiative in the Madinah of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. He also thanked the businessmen in Madinah for their contribution as well as all workers in this project, wishing them every success for the success of the idea of Madinah slums development.
