20250417892This workshop is part of the department’s program to prepare prospective graduates for the next stage of their academic and professional journey. The workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of textual editing and annotation, exploring how editors and translators shape the way literary works are presented, interpreted, and understood by modern readers. Drawing on examples from Shakespearean textual studies and literary translation, the workshop highlights the relationship between editorial practice, interpretation, and reader engagement.
This workshop is divided into two main parts: the first part offers a brief introduction to Shakespearean text editing, with particular attention to editorial decision-making and the transmission of early modern texts. In the second part, students will apply these principles to the annotation of literary translations, developing an editorial presence that helps mediate historical, autobiographical, philosophical, and cultural contexts for readers. While the workshop primarily aims to enrich students’ academic and analytical understanding, it also introduces foundational skills relevant to publishing, translation, and critical textual analysis.
