Abstract
This study aimed to assess the level of environmental awareness among university youth through its three dimensions: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. It also sought to identify the obstacles hindering the development of environmental awareness, and to derive planning indicators that could support future strategies for enhancing such awareness. Methodology: The study employed the social survey method using a sample approach, targeting 1,064 university students in Riyadh. A questionnaire was used as the main tool for data collection. Results: The findings revealed that 97% of the sample (1,035 participants) reported engagement in environmental activities, such as cleaning and tree-planting campaigns. The level of environmental awareness across all three dimensions was found to be moderate: Cognitive dimension: Moderate knowledge about environmental issues. Emotional dimension: Moderate feelings and concern for the environment. Behavioral dimension: Moderate practices, such as advising on water and electricity conservation. These results indicate that while university youth possess a minimum level of environmental awareness, it does not reach a high level of commitment or actual practice. Main obstacles to environmental awareness development included: A lack of trained human resources to address environmental risks. The weak role of media in raising public environmental awareness. Based on these findings, the study suggests several planning indicators that could help enhance environmental awareness among university youth, such as integrating environmental education, strengthening media involvement, and training specialized personnel.
