Academic Advising
The Department of English aims to ensure that all our students receive the appropriate academic advising at every stage of their academic development. A group of advisors from our faculty members are assigned to each student according to his/her year of registration. The primary role of the academic advisor is to guide and assist students in matters relating to course selection, degree requirements and academic standing, as well as informing them of all university policies, regulations and resources.
Although the role of academic advisors is an ongoing responsibility that continues throughout the year, one of their most important advising tasks is guiding students during registration week at the beginning of each semester. This is done by reviewing their academic records, their registered courses, and their study plans, which is then used to determine the courses each student is required to register.
Regulations for Course Registration
The department will only accept electronic registration requests. Paper registration forms are only permitted in exceptional cases, or in the event that there is a malfunction in the electronic system. The following are some regulations that should be kept in mind in the course registration process.
-
Students must make sure that they are registered in all the courses required for their academic level.
-
Students are not allowed to register in courses offered for a level higher than their current ones, even if they had already fulfilled the requirements of that level, as it is not in their best interest. Enrolling in courses from different levels will expose students to the potential problem of having multiple midterm and final exams scheduled on the same day, and it is a problem the department will not be able to resolve.
-
Students are not allowed to exceed the academic load permitted for their cumulative GPA. This is applicable even in the case of low-performing students with schedules that have fewer credit hours, because bypassing the recommended load would increase the probability of their failure. The department will, however, grant exceptions to students who are expected to graduate this year for the purpose of speeding up the graduation process. When this is applicable, students will be allowed to register only one course (with a maximum of 3 credit hours above the permitted load.
-
Students are not allowed to drop a course from their current (or previous) academic level.
-
Student requests to transfer from their original groups will be denied if they fail to present justified reasons for the transfer. If the department accepts a student’s reasons but the group to which the student wishes to transfer is closed, the transfer will be possible only if there is an option for a “true swap” - where two students who are enrolled in two different groups of the same course swap their placements in a simultaneous transfer between the two groups. Once this condition is met, both students must submit an electronic request and fill in the ‘reasons’ field with the name, university number, and group number of the student they are swapping with.
-
Students who have successfully completed all previous-level courses in accordance with the department's study plan are not allowed to change their schedules (by adding, dropping or changing assigned groups), nor is the department authorized to make such amendments. However, if these students encounter a legitimate registration problem (as in the case of schedules missing a course or more from a student’s current academic level), they must check with the department's administration.
-
Students will not be able to make online registrations for off-semester courses as registration in these courses is generally very restricted. However, there are exceptions, and the following groups will be prioritised:
-
Students who are expected to graduate in the current semester.
-
Low-performing students who are unable to register in other courses.
-
Students who will be expected to graduate the following semester upon adding these courses.
Course Prerequisites
Students will not be permitted to register in the following courses if they have not met their prerequisites. Please do not insist on requesting to waive any prerequisites.
