The Department of Pharmacognosy participated in the activities of the 19th Scientific Forum organized by Umm Al-Qura University, under the noble patronage of the UQU President, Prof. Abdullah Bafail, and in collaboration with the Saudi Historical Society, entitled, "History and Civilization of Makkah Throughout Time". The forum was held at King Abdul-Aziz Historical Hall in Al-Abdiyyah on Wednesday and Thursday, 27–28 Jumada Al-Awwal, 1441 A.H., in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Hind bint Abdul-Rahman Al Saud, a number of their excellencies from among the former presidents of the university, and senior researchers and leaders from various Saudi universities and sectors.
The Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy, Dr. Al-Jawharah Al-Qathami, made a presentation about the plants of Makkah, many of which are mentioned in the verses of the Qur'anic and in Prophetic Hadiths, such as the lote tree, senna, henna, and miswak. She also shed light on other Makkah plants which were studied by a team from the Department of Pharmacognosy for their therapeutic efficacy, including: neem tree, galingale, and rubus. These studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals.
