HRH, Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prince of Riyadh Region, sponsored at his office at the Divan, the signature of Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s Chair for the Study of Mecca’s History. This signing was attended by the Minister of Higher Education Dr. Khaled bin Mohammed Al-Ankari, Secretary of King Abdulaziz Foundation, Dr. Fahd bin Abdullah Al-Samari, President of Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Bakri bin Matouq Asas and the Vice-President of Cognitive and Creative Work, Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Nabil bin Abdulkader Koshk. HRH approved the establishment of such chair, to be a research chair bearing the name of Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for the Study of Mecca’s History at the Univeristy of Umm Al-Qura. This was done under the supervision of the University of Umm Al-Qura and its venue is the Center for the Mecca and Medina History in Mecca.
HE President of Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Bakri bin Matouq Asas, expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation to HRH Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prince of Riyadh region for his approval and sponsorship of this important research chair that bears his gracious name. He expressed that this care and interest HRH shows reflect his passion for Mecca, his sentimental ties with it and sweet memories about it, as well as his keenness to authenticate Meccas historically, in addition to his passion for history, supporting historical studies, especially Mecca’s history. He pointed out that this gracious initiative is a continuation of His Highness’ efforts in serving the national and Islamic history, owing to his reputation as a fan of history and historians, his interest in this science that he reads about, criticizes, follows up, narrates, classifies and supports. HE Mr. Asas continued, “This interest is reflected in His Highness’ chairing King Abdulaziz Foundation, his honorary presidency of the Saudi Historical Society, his sponsorship of many seminars and scientific gatherings on the history of KSA and the Arabian Peninsula’s. Certainly His Highness’ award for the Arabian Peninsula History Studies is a witness of his passion for history, which rightfully gains him the title “Prince of Historians”.
Vice-Presidnet of Cognitive and Creative Work, Umm Al-Qura University, Dr. Nabil bin Abdulkader Koshk, pointed out that the chair that cost SAR 5 Mio and will last for 5 years, will be – God willing – complementary to the role of Mecca History Center and King Abdulaziz Foundation in serving national and Islamic history . Moreover, the partnership of King Abdualziz Foundation with Umm Al-Qura University in the chair of Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for the Study of Mecca’s History will enrich the historical intellectual movement and inspire the elucidation of great values in the history of our great Nation Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in particular and the history of the Arabian Peninsula and the Islamic history in general, as well as the beacon of guidance and light, Mecca.
He also explained that this chair is the result of Umm Al-Qura’s desire to enhance community partnership with it for the sake of achieving quantum leap towards excellence and creativity, especially in the field of researches. He stressed that this chair holds special importance as it combines two important symbols; Salman and Mecca and the collaboration of Umm Al-Qura University and King Abdulaziz Foundation in managing it, hence making everybody foresee that this chair will achieve success in realizing its objectives, completing its programs and excelings in its studies, God willing.
On the other hand, Dr. Abdullah bin Hussein Alsherif, supervisor of the Chair, stated that the chair aims to serve and shed light on the history of Mecca, shed light and support scientific research, strengthen historic intellect, validate the sources of Meccan history, translate books and publish materials categorized under Meccan history. Moreover, the chair may be a link between academics and researchers in the department of history in the university of Umm Al-Qura and Center for the Mecca and Medina History in Mecca, complementing the role of the Center and a partner of King Abdulaziz Foundation in serving national history. Also, making research and consulting partnerships with scientific centers, government and private entities in the areas of the chair’s specialty, in addition to developing partnerships and scientific activities in the Meccan history area, as well as supporting the graduate study students in the department of history and researchers in the history of Mecca, contributing to the works of the Hijj and the Two Sanctuaries’ encyclopedia and enriching the scientific role of the university in serving society and enhancing the community role in supporting effective research, in addition to directing research towards serving society by studying historic issues and participating in solving issues and directing historic research towards exploring the past, serving the present and foreseeing the future.
He pointed out that the chair will include giving lectures and holding seminars in Meccan history, publishing theses and manuscripts of Meccan history, validate, translate and publish foreign and Arab material in the history of Meccan and also onducting studies and research projects concerning the history of Mecca.
