Overview on the Establishment of the Center for Safety, Risk and Crisis Management (SAFE)
The Center for Safety, Risk and Crisis Management (SAFE) started out as one of the winning National Transformation 2020 initiatives that were endorsed by the Ministry of Education. It is the initiative that received the biggest share of human and material resources, among our university’s nine winning initiatives that distinguished us among the universities of the Kingdom.
The Center’s strategy was designed based on an extended study that included an investigation of the actual situation of safety in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf; legislative entities in Saudi Arabia; technologies and computer software in SAFE’s fields of work; analysis of the Saudi market; best practices at similar global centers; focus groups for many related parties; global trends in the field of safety and security; other. Moreover, the elements of the strategic plan were discussed through numerous meetings and workshops.
SAFE Center carries out its mission by providing experts specialized in giving consultation and training in the field of safety systems in industrial and construction projects as well as general projects, and in the field of industrial safety; planning; handling risks, disasters, and crises. The Center works, in parallel, on preparing and providing a set of programs; courses; and consulting services. These include programs specialized in developing and upgrading safety and security systems; implementing quality standards; training courses on occupational safety and health (OSH) in engineering projects; consulting and training services in the area of preventive security, occupational safety, and loss prevention at vital institutions; consulting and training services in industrial security systems, public safety, disaster and crisis response planning; training courses on the advanced patterns of OSH as well as the examination, classification, and analysis of risks; consulting and training services in the international standards of planning; making policies for occupational safety and security.
While there are more than ten giant development projects in the region, the importance of this center is attributed to the fact that safety engineering is a specialty rarely found at Saudi universities and the lack of cadres in this field. Added to this is the increase in safety accidents in recent years.
A new, leading methodology is adopted in the implementation of SAFE Center. The Center’s technological infrastructure is built upon scientific foundations. This is through utilizing advanced technologies, along with providing technical and technological equipment and supplies to ensure a constant provision of services. This methodology is also used for building an advanced model in accordance with international standards in design and in making policies for occupational safety and security. Furthermore, it is used in preparing and providing specialized training courses and programs.
SAFE Center has achieved major progress in a short period of time. It has developed a number of internationally certified training programs and courses. This is in addition to two executive diplomas that will be offered this year: One is in safety and health in the field of construction; the other in occupational safety and risk management. Both were developed and approved in cooperation with the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) in Britain.
