Department of Postgraduate Studies in Shari`ah

 

All praise be to Allah, peace and blessings be upon the Prophet, his Family, Companions and Followers up to the Day of Resurrection.

Then;

 

The College of Shari`ah and Islamic Studies is actually a pioneering college in the University of Education all over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Also, the Department of Postgraduate Studies in Shari`ah is the pioneer of higher education in the Kingdom.

 

The Department of Postgraduate Studies in Shari`ah has become the first department awarding the master's degree and PhD. Since it was established by virtue of the Royal Decree No. 38/ dated 22/10/1387 A.H, and since it discussed the first master's degree on 3/2/1392 A.H. as well as the first PhD on 26/2/1398 A.H, the Department has continued to award master's degree and PhD in the fields of (Islamic Jurisprudence, Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence and Islamic Economics, Our'an, Sunnah and Aqeedah "Creed"). This applied before separating the College of Da'wah and Usul-ud-Din (Call to Islam and Religion's Fundamentals) from the Faculty of Shari`ah (Islamic Law) in 1401 A.H. Since the Department was established, forty years earlier, the number of theses discussed for researchers up to the end of second semester of 1427/1428 A.H, is nearly (1213).

 

Therefore, this Department has bridged a great gab, fulfilled a dire need and met the growing number of applications for master's and PhD degrees; not only at the level of the college of Shari`ah and Umm Al-Qura University but also the entire Kingdom (its universities, colleges, institutes, courts, etc.) and so many Islamic countries. Graduates of this Department have been known for their trustworthiness inside and outside the Kingdom, and they occupied high positions, leaving the most notable impression.

 

The Department is still committed to its mission as the number of applying postgraduates inside and outside the Kingdom is still increasing. In addition, the Department enjoys some blessed features, including the experience it had acquired for forty years, the strenuous efforts exerted by its staff and officials, the fruitful cooperation by the departments of (Shari`ah "Islamic Law", Judiciary and Islamic Economics) and the permanent support by the Dean of the college and the Director of University.

A- Establishment:

By the beginning of the academic year 1388/1389 A.H, the Department started to give courses, only for master's degree. On 3/2/1392 A.H. the first master's degree was awarded. However, on 7/5/1394 A.H, the Supreme Council of Higher Education, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, approved the PhD regulations. Consequently on 26/2/1398 A.H, the first PhD thesis on Fiqh and its principles was discussed. Furthermore, the Department of Postgraduate Studies in Shari`ah for male students was inaugurated in 1396/1397 A.H. and in 1398/1399 A.H, the Department of Postgraduate Studies in Islamic Economics was inaugurated until the establishment of Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca on 22/6/1401 A.H.

 

Currently, the Department has branches for Fiqh (Jurisprudence), Usul Al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence) and Islamic Economics. It awards master degrees and PhDs for both male and female researchers in Fiqh (Jurisprudence) and Usul Al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence). However, master degrees and PhDs in Islamic Economics are awarded only to male researchers.
